From
the
Captain's
Chair
A
cut
above
the
rest!
Welcome
to
the
Spring
issue
of
Assimilate.
National
Science
Week
2007
has
once
again
proved
to
be
a
very
essential
part
of
our
club's
ongoing
awareness
within
the
South
Australian
Community.
Our
event
at
Science
Week
-
The
Adelaide
Pop
Culture
Festival
conducted
from
August
17
to
26,
recorded
26,
093
visitors
that
actively
took
part
in
many
of
our
activities
that
included
workshops
in
Alien
Makeup
and
Prosthetic
construction,
Fantasy
Costume
construction,
a
four
day
Retro
film
festival,
as
well
as
a
unique
mission
quest
conducted
by
our
very
own
Mawson
Institute
for
Learning
and
Knowledge.
With
large
attendances
at
all
workshops
as
well
as
the
Ultimate
Quiz
night
(conducted
as
a
prequel
to
our
event)
and
a
real
highlight
of
the
nine
day
festival,
ensured
the
club
of
new
memberships
throughout
the
week.
Club
members
actively
donated
their
time
over
the
nine
days
and
their
dedication
to
ensuring
a
successful
event
paid
off
once
more
as
we
have
received
great
praise
from
the
National
Science
Week
Committee,
resulting
in
our
club
being
invited
back
once
more,
to
attend
in
2008!
Appreciative
thanks
to
The
Australian
Costumer's
Guild
for
their
fantastic
costume
displays
and
informative
workshops.
The
partnership
between
the
Mawson
and
the
Guild
has
been
very
successful
and
we
look
ahead
to
many
great
ventures
together.
Our
exhibition
of
retro
sci
fi
memorabilia
thoroughly
entertained
the
visiting
public
as
they
reminisced
on
some
of
the
great
shows
from
the
era.
Thank
you
to
The
South
Australian
Fan
Force
for
their
participation
in
our
Alien
Invasion
of
Rundle
Mall
on
day
one
of
the
festival.
Congratulations
to
all
members
that
donated
their
time
as
you
are
all
true
credit
to
our
great
club.
I
wish
you
all
a
fantastic
spring
season

Mawson's

open
A
word
from
a
new
voice
onboard!
Lt
Glenn
Potter
extends
a
warm
welcome
to
all
at
Starship
Mawson.
As
this
is
my
first
contribution,
I
have
a
great
deal
to
share
with
you
in
this
and
future
issues.
I
have
been
with
The
Starship
Mawson
since
it's
inception
and
Star
Trek
has
been
a
part
of
my
life
for
many
years.
In
April
2006
I
was
fortunate
enough
to
travel
to
Las
Vegas
where
I
visited
the
Star
Trek
Experience,
and
what
an
experience
it
was.
One
of
the
many
highlights
was
the
exhibition
in
the
Museum
at
the
Experience.
Displays
included
uniforms,
models
and
items
that
were
actually
used
in
all
five
Star
Trek
tv
shows
and
films.
Another
highlight
was
the
backstage
tour.
The
tour
outlined
how
the
television
series
and
films
were
produced.
Did
you
know
that
it
takes
approximately
eight
hours
to
apply
the
makeup
for
the
Worf
character
and
others?
During
my
visit
I
also
managed
to
enjoy
a
unique
dining
experience
at
Quark's
bar
where
I
took
in
some
Romulan
Ale
and
a
Warp
Core
Breach
(A
high
octane
beverage!)
I
was
so
taken
in
with
this
visit,
that
I
attended
the
Experience
again
in
August
2006
to
be
a
part
of
the
celebrations
at
the
40th
anniversary
of
Star
Trek
convention.
The
celebrations
lasted
for
four
days
with
numerous
opportunities
to
rub
shoulders
with
all
the
main
cast,
allowing
me
some
great
photo's
with
the
stars.
A
short
but
enthralling
trip
and
a
great
chance
to
purchase
an
array
of
memorabilia
including
some
rare
Star
Trek
collector
plates
commemorating
the
occasion.
Since
returning
from
my
trip
and
attending
Terra
Nova
5,
I
have
established
my
own
web
page
detailing
these
experiences.
You
can
check
them
out
plus
more
at
the
link
below
and
please
feel
free

I
am
looking
forward
to
seeing
you
all
in
September
as
I
am
travelling
over
from
Melbourne
to
attend
the
Pancake
Meeting.
